Auroville

Auroville is a unique international township located in the state of Tamil Nadu, India, near the Pondicherry region.

It was founded on February 28, 1968, by Mirra Alfassa, known as "The Mother," who was a spiritual collaborator of Sri Aurobindo, a prominent Indian philosopher, yogi, and guru. Unlike many other communities that emerged from the hippie movement of the 1960s, Auroville was conceived with a spiritual foundation, aiming to be a universal town where men and women of all countries could live in peace and progressive harmony above all creeds, all politics, and all nationalities.

Vision and Foundation

The concept of Auroville came from The Mother's vision of a place that would realize human unity and the transformation of consciousness. The Mother believed that such a place would contribute to the evolution of consciousness and serve as a model for the future of humanity. Auroville's foundation ceremony in 1968 was attended by representatives of 124 nations and 23 Indian states, who brought soil from their homelands to mix in a lotus-shaped urn, symbolizing human unity.
